Biography

I grew up in a ‘noisy’ household, mixed with canto-pop stars in the 70s, K-pop boy bands and a questionable collection of visual rock stuff. However, my mother’s favourite pastime will always be putting me through Black Angels by George Crumb on YouTube, so she can look at my frowning face when the cellist starts to bow on the gong.

It took me some years to understand and enjoy George Crumb. Still, I have always imagined working in the music industry since I was young. As I grew older and took violin more seriously, I wanted to find a way to make my musician dream feasible, and I realised I needed proper training. Up to that point, I only had bi-weekly lessons and didn’t spend enough time practising. So, I quit gymnastics and urged my mum to enrol me in the junior programme of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. I was accepted at 11 years old and was the oldest kid in my musicianship class, and clearly, a lot of catching up was needed. Later, I enrolled in the full-time diploma programme of HKAPA at 16 as an underage applicant after self-studying A-Levels, so I could spend more time practising. After graduating, I came to the UK for my Master’s studies.

Moving to London has expanded my horizons. The city showed me many ways to make a living as a freelance musician. I first started as a peripatetic music teacher, working in six schools across London, teaching violin, piano, and early-years music curriculum. I am also lucky to be involved in different music theatre and opera projects. These works kept my performing life alive and busy. As a newbie teacher, I learnt to cherish the hours I spend practising alone even more, as that is the only time I feel like I am in control of what is happening around me, and order isn’t something guaranteed in a classroom full of children! After feeling more settled into my teaching career, I started auditioning more and soon got the incredible opportunity to play with Sinfonia Smith Square in the 2026/27 season!

Music has brought me to places I never imagined being in, and it gave me the tools to express myself where words fail. I cannot imagine a life not playing the violin. That being said, you might find me struggling to keep my balance while learning ballet as an absolute adult beginner, or watching anime with a big pot of coffee when I’m not with my fiddle…
