This is choral music at its most moving and most alive.
Grammy-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre returns to London and Smith Square Hall with his acclaimed professional ensemble, the Eric Whitacre Singers.
This programme weaves together luminous contemporary choral writing, intimately reflective pieces, and electrifying spirituals.
Eric Whitacre is one of the most performed choral composers of our time, and this is a chance to see him conducting his own group in some of his much-loved works, including Lux Aurumque, Water Night, and i carry your heart. Also in the programme is Sing to the Moon, a beautiful song by Laura Mvula with whom Eric has collaborated and performed many times, and music from fellow American composer, Jennifer Lucy Cook.
The second half brings a new energy with re-imagined modern classics and the irresistible energy of Moses Hogan’s spirituals, culminating in Whitacre’s haunting arrangement of Hurt.
The evening closes with a magical, participatory encore – Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening – inviting audience members to sing together with Eric and the choir.
Ticket holders are invited to attend a pre-concert rehearsal with Eric, focussing on Stopping by Woods (using the original Robert Frost text to Eric’s piece, Sleep). Please indicate if you would like to join the rehearsal when prompted during checkout, and we will contact you with the details nearer the time.
