Step into the secret world of William Byrd
Widely regarded as England’s finest composer, Byrd lived as a covert Catholic during the Reformation, under threat of persecution. In defiance, he composed sacred music for hidden worship, including his Mass for Five Voices: intimate, luminous, and shaped for secrecy.
Produced by Concert Theatre Works, this immersive concert invites you inside that world. Move freely through a candlelit space as costumed performers bring the past into the present. Hear the music up close, and share in simple offerings of soup and bread prepared on site and served by the cast – gestures that echo the intimacy and humanity of those secret gatherings.
Featuring acclaimed vocal ensemble, The Gesualdo Six, alongside viol consort Fretwork, join us to celebrate 400 years of Byrd’s enduring legacy.
Due to popular demand, additional seats have been released for the Friday 6:30pm performance, along with increased availability across all performances.
