London Phoenix Orchestra opens its 2025-26 season with one of the great 19th century symphonies.
Dedicated to his patron and “best friend” Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is dominated throughout by the recurrence of its opening fanfare, a metaphor for “the fatal power which prevents one from attaining the goal of happiness… there is nothing to be done but to submit to it and lament in vain.”
