Nordic voices: Nielsen and Sibelius

Nielsen’s Flute Concerto sparkles with vitality and wit, full of rapid exchanges between soloist and orchestra. Shifting effortlessly between lyricism and mischief, it captures the flute’s many voices – singing, playful, and bold – in music that feels spontaneous and alive.

Premiered in 1905, Sibelius’s Pelléas et Mélisande is considered one of the composer’s masterpieces. Intimate, atmospheric, and deeply human, Sibelius’s music for Maeterlinck’s symbolist play paints a world of mystery and tenderness, where emotion lies beneath the surface and every note shimmers with quiet intensity.
