Having collaborated extensively over the past year during their time at the Samling Institute, Shipston Song Festival, Wigmore Hall and beyond, baritone Sam Hird and pianist Francesca Lauri present a selection of their favourite song repertoire in French and English with works by Gabriel Fauré, John Ireland, Benjamin Britten, and at the heart of the programme – Francis Poulenc’s wonderful Banalités. Sam is an Associate Artist of the Sinfonia Smith Square after winning the Peter Hulsen Orchestral Song Prize with George Butterworth’s ‘Six Songs From A Shropshire Lad’ earlier in the year.

Sam won acclaim for his performance as Danilo in the RCM’s recent production of the Merry Widow, and recent awards include the Clonter Opera Prize and the top vocal award at the Verbier Festival. Francesca has won numerous awards as a collaborative pianist over the past year, including success at the prestigious Royal Over Seas League Annual Music Competition, and as a Britten-Pears Young Artist has been working on French Song and Mélodie repertoire in Summer 2024 led by Veronique Gens and Susan Manoff. This is a chance to hear the two of them in a Lunchtime Concert with some excitingly diverse songs.
