The BLSO was founded in 2016 by Seb Valentine, a serving detective and graduate of the Royal College of Music, to improve wellbeing in the emergency services through music. Emergency services personnel are more likely than the general public to suffer from poor mental health because of the stress of the job and exposure to traumatic events. They are also less likely to seek help. Music, especially group music making, has been scientifically proven to boost mood and help people connect.

BLSO orchestral workshops enable musicians in the blue light community to come together and experience orchestral playing in a safe and supportive environment. These events require no ongoing commitment, a barrier to shift workers joining regular orchestras. Many of our musicians have returned to the joy of playing after many years because our events are tailored to their needs. We are delighted to be joined by pianist Schay Wickham, who served as a police officer in London before returning to his first love, music. Please support your emergency services by joining us for this special evening of music played by some very special people.
