Biography
I was born and raised in Mexico City. I’ve spent a significant amount of time in my life either on a stage or getting ready to be on one. I started with musical theatre when I was six and continued until I was 14. Somewhere in the middle of that, when I was 11, I convinced my mom and grandma to let me start guitar and electric bass lessons. By the time I was 15, bass guitar was my instrument of choice.
I originally wanted to be a Rockstar, but my mom told me that I could only choose rock once I had a degree in classical music, so when I turned 16, I started to study double bass in the junior course of Facultad de Música that belongs to Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Originally, I wasn’t sure about the double bass, but after watching a recording of Rinat Ibragimov, any doubt disappeared. It was a very busy life from that moment: I was playing in two different bands, learning double bass and music theory, and finishing high school, all at the same time. This lifestyle didn’t really change in the next years. By the time I was 19, I was still studying double bass, now in Escuela Superior de Música, whilst also studying journalism and trying to make my band stand out. I was also the bass player for Tradición Mexicana Quintet, a chamber music group specialising in Mexican traditional music from the late 1800s/early 1900s.
I got my journalism degree during COVID, which then allowed me to give all my focus to double bass. A year after that, in 2021, I auditioned and won a place to be in Orquesta Escuela Carlos Chávez, a project that allows young musicians that reside anywhere in Mexico to get a Bachelor’s Degree while developing a very intense orchestral discipline. It was during my time in OECCh that I discovered how in love I was with orchestral music and with playing the double bass in a section.
After participating in a Double Bass Festival in Mexico City, in which I had the opportunity to have masterclasses with teachers such as Luis Cabrera, Marco Behtash, and José Moreira (the three of them being Ibragimov’s students), I decided that I wanted to finish my education under their guidance, so in 2022 I auditioned to Guildhall School of Music and Drama and in 2023 I became a Guildhall student. I finished my education this year and reassured my love for orchestral playing in all sorts of contexts.
For me, music represents love, discipline, and community. I’ve met some of the most important people in my life thanks to music, and it has given me the opportunity to share things with so many people, and at the same time, this journey of becoming a musician has given me the chance to evolve and transform into the person I am today.
Aside from music, I like to spend my time watching movies, reading, going to museums, and cooking.
