Biography
I grew up in a musical family, so some of my earliest memories are of watching my dad practise the violin. Apparently, I was constantly asking him when I could finally start playing myself. My first attempt came in the form of a toy violin – it was really just a clever way to keep me occupied while he played. I started learning properly at seven, when I joined a music school in Warsaw, where general education and music were woven together from the start. Music quickly became a natural, essential part of my everyday life. I stayed there for 12 years, first on violin, and from 15, the viola as well.
Moving to London and entering the Royal Academy of Music felt like a dream. I found myself surrounded by inspiring musicians, in an environment that gave me opportunities I could hardly have imagined as a child. I threw myself into chamber music, took part in exciting orchestral projects, and began seriously exploring historical performance. Over seven years there, I completed my undergraduate and Master’s degrees on modern viola, then a professional diploma in historical performance. I was guided by wonderful teachers, among them Martin Outram, Jon Thorne, John Crockatt, and Annette Isserlis, as well as friends who kept inspiring me musically and personally.
Some of my most memorable experiences from my years at the Academy were: performing Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro as a soloist with the Academy’s Sainsbury Soloists; representing the Academy at the Cavatina Competition at Wigmore Hall with my string quartet; and taking part in a project with the Juilliard School and Barbara Hannigan that became a Linn Records release of Stravinsky’s music. I have also been fortunate to work with musicians such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder, Masaaki Suzuki, Rachel Podger, Edward Gardner, Trevor Pinnock, amongst many more, and I am forever grateful for these experiences.
Today I’m happiest when exploring, moving between modern and historical performance, between orchestral playing and chamber music, letting each inform the other.
Outside music, I love travelling, wandering around art galleries, going to the cinema, and visiting and discovering new places. I’m still that curious little girl in many ways. I just have slightly better instruments now!
