Biography
Duncan was Chief Executive of Historic England, a post he held from its inception in 2015 until his retirement in October 2025, establishing the organisation’s identity and strengthening its role as a leading champion and protector of the historic environment.
Previously, he was Chief Executive of Alexandra Park and Palace, initiating the restoration of the Victorian theatre, and Director of the Greenwich Foundation, overseeing the restoration and public opening of Sir Christopher Wren’s historic buildings.
Earlier in his career, as founding Director of the Somerset House Trust, Duncan led the transformation of Somerset House from civil service offices and a car park into one of London’s most vibrant cultural destinations.
Duncan has a background in professional and post-graduate archaeology, and is a qualified chartered accountant. He has always held a passion for classical singing.
