Biography
Born in South Korea, Eugene Lee began studying the violin at the age of four. After moving to New Zealand in 1995, he made his orchestral debut at just 14 with the Auckland Philharmonia and went on to perform with all of New Zealand’s major symphony orchestras.
Following his postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, Eugene joined Sinfonia Smith Square, where he developed a close artistic partnership that continues to this day. He later joined the Philharmonia Orchestra as Assistant Concertmaster, a position that highlights his leadership, musical insight, and refined technique.
Eugene regularly performs with many of the United Kingdom’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Alongside his orchestral work, Eugene maintains a strong passion for conducting. As part of his ongoing collaboration with Sinfonia Smith Square, he has conducted season-opening concerts and festival performances. He was appointed the ensemble’s Associate Artist in 2023.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Eugene has appeared at prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room, and has performed at major festivals across Europe, America, and Asia to critical acclaim. His playing is celebrated for its expressive warmth, beauty of tone, and deep musical sensitivity.
