Biography
My first experience of music in an ensemble setting was not with clarinet but with singing in a choir. I loved the process of learning and performing the songs, and singing with other people really built my confidence and passion for music.
During my first year in the National Children’s Orchestra, we played a medley of songs from the shows and this ignited my love for musical theatre, and my dream career became playing in a theatre pit. I took up the saxophone and the flute as well so that this could become a more likely option for me. I joined Junior Guildhall and there were lots of ensemble opportunities going on there, and through this and my time at Kent County Youth Orchestra, I developed a love for orchestral music. Music courses as a child were some of the best experiences of my life so far.
I find contemporary music really inspiring, especially when combined with theatre or storytelling. Towards the end of my time at Junior Guildhall, I was introduced to Schoenberg’s ‘Pierrot Lunaire’, and this opened up a real interest in contemporary music for me. Studying at the Royal College of Music, I enjoyed free improvisation with my peers, and found it a very liberating and refreshing approach to performance and to getting to know my instrument even better. I took composition as a second study during my undergraduate course, and I’m passionate about hearing new compositions performed, which could shape the future of classical music.
Outside of classical music, I love drawing portraits, going on walks in nature, drinking tea, and listening to Chick Corea, My Chemical Romance, The Kinks, and Squeeze.
