Biography
I first discovered the cello through a DVD of an orchestra performance. The sound struck me as warm, human, and unlike anything I had ever heard. I began on the piano, as many recommended, but when I finally had the chance to hold a cello, I was so excited that I played on it before my first lesson; the result was more of a squealing… Luckily, the sound did not kill my love for the cello. A few years later, I gave my very first solo performance with my school orchestra, playing a movement of Boccherini’s Cello Concerto No. 9. That moment confirmed music would become a central part of my life.
Leaving Taiwan to study at The Purcell School in the UK opened an entirely new chapter. I was surrounded by inspiring musicians, performed with my piano trio at the Wigmore Hall, and played in a masterclass for Steven Isserlis. With the guidance of Alexander Boyarsky, I strengthened my technique and overcame early physical challenges, gaining confidence as both a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician.
At the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, I grew through masterclasses with Hannah Roberts and Jian Wang, and under Matthew Sharp’s teaching, I shifted my focus from technical perfection to expressing more freely. Later, studying with Eduardo Vassallo sparked a passion for orchestral work, leading to opportunities with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Training Scheme and Dorset Opera Academy. After the pandemic, I also discovered the joy of attending concerts as a listener; experiencing music from the other side of the stage gave me a renewed sense of connection and community.
Most recently, I completed my master’s degree at the Royal College of Music with Tim Walden. During this time, I joined the Ulster Orchestra Professional Experience Scheme, performing my first professional orchestral concert, and returned to Dorset Opera. Having now graduated, I am stepping into my first year as a professional musician with excitement and curiosity. I am looking forward to working with Sinfonia Smith Square and am eager to see where this journey leads.
Beyond music, I love watching Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese dramas and anime. I am also passionate about food! (Even though I am a picky eater…) These simple joys remind me that creativity and inspiration can be found everywhere.
