Biography

Although I come from a non-musical family, my sister’s cello playing sparked my interest in music. I found playing an instrument very cool, and when I was six, my parents encouraged me to learn the violin, hoping for a lighter, more portable instrument that could serenade them.

I initially progressed well with the violin, but as a young boy in an all-boys school, I was captivated by sports and never considered a future in music. However, while I was growing up, I started forming a deeper connection with music, as it allows me to connect with people in a way nothing else can. Beautiful music playing can express emotions words cannot capture, and the shared experience—especially in live music between performer and audience—is something I find both humbling and inspiring.

While music became central to my life, I remained curious about other fields. That curiosity led me to study psychology alongside music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In the end, my love for music proved too strong to ignore, and I decided to pursue it fully while keeping psychology as a minor. During my undergraduate years, I led the university orchestra and freelanced with professional ensembles, gaining valuable experience and confirming that the stage was where I truly belonged.

After graduation, I moved to London to pursue a Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music. Transitioning from an academic university to a performance-based conservatoire was eye-opening. I got to be surrounded by world-class faculty and talented peers, exchanging ideas and pushing my artistry forward. Living in London also meant being immersed in concerts, museums, and cultural experiences that continually inspired me. I admired the respect and recognition musicians receive in the UK, which made my studies here particularly fulfilling. Encouraged by this experience, I began the Artist Diploma at the Royal College of Music in 2024. This has given me opportunities to lead orchestral sections, work with multiple teachers, and perform regularly as part of London’s vibrant musical life. I have toured the UK with ensembles such as the Piccadilly Sinfonia and London Concertante, performing a wide range of repertoire.

Some of my most special memories come from attending music festivals. At the 2023 Schiermonnikoog Festival in the Netherlands, being far from the rush of the city allowed me to focus entirely on music—rehearsing, performing, and connecting with fellow musicians without the usual distractions of daily life. My experience at the Aspen Music Festival brought a different kind of inspiration, immersing me in a professional orchestral environment with efficient rehearsals leading to exhilarating performances. Experiences like these make me feel privileged that the violin has taken me to some of the most unique and beautiful places in the world, allowed me to meet exceptional people, and given me the chance to share music with audiences far from home.

Although music is central to who I am, staying active in other ways fuels my artistry. My background in sports continues to shape the way I practise and perform. I go to the gym, swim, and take part in a variety of sports, which help me stay strong, energised, and focused. These activities support not only my physical health but also mental clarity, so I can approach the violin with fresh ideas and renewed passion.
